Conrad Bakker

Canadian born and Illinois based artist Conrad Bakker's newest work: Untitled Project: The Crystal Land is an installation of sculpture as well as paintings of specific regional minerals listed in the famous Robert Smithson text The Crystal Land published in the May 1966 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

Bakker's paintings of minerals are based on online auction images, specifically images of rocks in the hands of their owners. These highly constructed pictures of tangible commodities engage the open model of Smithson’s site/nonsite dialectic to consider rock collecting, the global mining industry, internet economies, material properties, and hand labor.

Conrad Bakker has exhibited his work nationally and internationally at the Tate Modern in London, Galerie Analix Forever in Geneva, The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago in Illinois, The Blanton Museum of Art in Texas, The Soap Factory in Minnesota, Southern Exposure in San Francisco, Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies and at Apex Art, Dorsky Projects and The New Museum of Contemporary Art in the New York City area.
